NEC Philips Unified Solutions appointed Alcatel-Lucent Application partner for IP DECT Mobility solutions

NEC Philips Unified Solutions (NEC Philips) has been appointed Alcatel-Lucent’s Application partner for IP DECT Mobility solutions, as announced at the Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Forum held in Paris from 3 to 5 March 2009.

By this appointment NEC Philips becomes Alcatel-Lucent’s preferred partner for IP DECT Mobility solutions. Alcatel-Lucent channels and customers can now take full advantage of NEC Philips’ IP DECT Mobility solutions in combination with Alcatel’s OmniPCX enterprise communication platform.

One of the key drivers for Alcatel-Lucent to select NEC Philips is the wide product range NEC Philips offers, including terminals to suit every customer need and support of all frequency ranges used in EMEA, the USA and Asia Pacific. The handsets automatically adapt to the frequency that’s being used by the base station, while NEC Philips’ dual band solution is a unique offering in the market that is in great demand in the cruise line industry.

The NExT plan’s success confirms the effectiveness of the Group’s strategy

The achievement of the 2006-2008 NExT plan (New Experience in Telecoms) confirms the success of France Telecom-Orange’s profound business transformation. Despite the rapidly changing environment, this has produced stronger growth, steady operating profitability and has demonstrated the Group’s ability to reduce costs while respecting its values and without any reduction in its dynamism.

Over the period the Group exceeded its targets for organic cash flow generation achieving 8 billion euros in 2008. Debt has been reduced from 48 billion euros at the end of 2005 to less than 36 billion euros at the end of 2008. At 1.85, the Group’s debt-to-equity ratio is amongst the lowest in the sector today; during the same period its dividend has increased by 39%.

These achievements bear witness to the success of the strategy announced in 2005 by Didier Lombard, based on:
– the convergence of networks and services;
– migration to the Internet and associated services (such as VoIP and IPTV);
– the increased contribution of new growth activities (such as content, online advertising, e-health); and
– the internationalisation of the Group under the Orange brand (123 million customers at the end of 2008 out of a total of 182 million).

Today, France-Telecom Orange operates in a rapidly changing ecosystem, anticipated in large part and addressed by the NExT strategy. The Group must also take steps to adapt to a deteriorating macroeconomic environment, even if telecoms services are so far demonstrating a good level of resilience.

In this context, Orange 2012 will build upon the success of the Group’s strategy and will apply new action plans in order to achieve an ambitious objective for organic cash flow generation.

New Action Plans: simplicity, agility, sustainable performance

The Orange 2012 initiatives are focused around three priorities:
– Simplifying the customer experience;
– Enhancing the agility with which the Group carries out its business;
– Ensuring performance that is durable over time.

Simplicity: To help customers address the profusion of technologies and provide accessible services to as many as possible, Group innovation will concentrate on simplicity, ergonomics and design, as well as quality of service both in terms of products and services and the “customer experience”. In this way, France Telecom-Orange will open a new era of “pacified” or trouble-free technology for its customers.

The initiatives in this field include a particular focus on patents aimed at simplifying product usage, the creation of a dedicated, integrated design and ergonomics team, generalising usage tests, improving call centre procedures, launching customer care and backup products, etc.

Agility: against a backdrop of extremely rapid change, the Group will rationalise its offers so as to accelerate its time to market and seize new opportunities. This move to increase flexibility in the business will also entail initiatives to drive further the Group’s transformation and optimise its cost structures.

Similarly, in light of the technological infrastructure developments (fibre optics, HSDPA and eventually LTE) expected to occur in the coming years the Group will pursue a deployment strategy taking into account the regulatory environment and the speed of adoption in the market.

Sustainable performance: Orange 2012 also aims to capitalise further on synergies available across the Group’s geographic footprint and to complete the roll-out of the integrated operator model: this will include further sharing of networks, information systems and platforms, the extension of innovative initiatives to the greatest possible number of markets and the extension of the Orange brand.

Armenia’s public channel Armenia 1 comes to Orange TV

Edward Nalbandian, Armenia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Didier Lombard, CEO of France Telecom-Orange, on 12th March in Paris celebrated the arrival of Armenia’s public channel, Armenia 1, to Orange TV
The channel will be available free of charge on Orange TV on broadband internet (Canal 305)
Orange strenghtens the bonds between France and Armenia

Armenia 1 on Orange TV
Armenia’s first public general viewing channel, Armenia I will from now on be broadcast on Orange TV’s channel 305 on broadband internet. Armenia 1 is a real link between Armenia and the Armenian community living in France.

Orange and Armenia
This agreement between Edward Nalbandian and Didier Lombard was also an opportunity to recall the many relationships over the years between the Group and the Armenian Republic.

In 1988, in the earthquake that shook Armenia, the Group flew a mobile satellite antenna to the country enabling it to communicate with the rest of the world. The first pictures and the communications re-established with the diaspora helped trigger and maintain the strong solidarity movement that arose in France.

Since 2000, Orange has supported the Armenian Fund of France in organising the annual Phonethon held in November each year. This operation run by hundreds of volunteers consists of collecting funds by telephone for structural projects in Armenia such as roads, schools, hospitals, nurseries… etc. The Group makes available all the logistics, technology and systems for call centres in four large cities in France.

Vodafone Trials New Product which aims to Boost Mobile Coverage in Homes and Small Offices
17 February 2009

Vodafone is trialling a new product designed to improve 3G mobile signals in areas of homes and offices which may have lower levels of network coverage.

Trials are currently underway in a number of Vodafone markets to assess the potential of the new product.

The product is based on technology which consists of a powered booster box connected to a small antenna that amplifies existing 3G signals from the wide area network to offer enhanced reception over a range of up to 9 metres.

The antenna is positioned where the mobile 3G network signal is strongest, either inside or outside the home or office and the booster is located inside where an improved signal is required.

During initial trials in Vodafone Egypt, users reported improvements in network performance including enhanced voice call reception and improved 3G data speeds within parts of the building which had previously only been able to offer low coverage levels.

“The trials are part of Vodafone’s ongoing commitment to develop new and innovative ways to enhance our customers’ mobile experience.” said Global Networks Director Andy MacLeod. “This product may help to improve performance in areas where customers may experience isolated spots of low coverage within the home or small office. Initial results are encouraging and we are now looking to get wider feedback from a broader set of customers.”

The product differs from a femtocell in that it strengthens the signal from the existing network rather than creating a new dedicated coverage zone. Vodafone is looking at both technologies to see how they can each meet the individual needs of customers.

In December, Vodafone Spain announced a pilot of femtocell technology with Vodafone Access Gateway. These access gateways connect 3G devices to the core network via broadband DSL and the pilot scheme was rolled out to a limited number of enterprise customers to assess its effectiveness in delivering wireless high-speed data and voice services.

China Mobile, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone Trials Confirm LTE as a Next Generation Candidate for Seamless Global Mobile Services
18 February 2009

China Mobile, Verizon Wireless, a joint venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone, and Vodafone announce that they have taken significant steps in developing the next-generation technology LTE as a truly global radio access technology, following yesterday’s LTE FDD/TDD Convergence Summit at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

As part of their ongoing three-way trials, the operators have successfully demonstrated in laboratory conditions the time division version of LTE (TD-LTE) showing that the technology is capable of operating effectively in both unpaired as well as paired spectrum.

In addition to these initial results, a range of chipset suppliers including ST-Ericsson and Qualcomm are developing equipment capable of supporting both Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) and Time Division Duplex (TDD) flavours of the LTE technology in a single device.

The trials are a step towards the goal of developing a single device capable of operating on TD-LTE technology in the case of unpaired spectrum or LTE FDD technology in the case of paired spectrum

The availability of a converged LTE FDD and TD-LTE system is set to enable an effective solution for both paired and unpaired spectrum. This also raises the prospect of providing greater interoperability between different global operators offering customers greater levels of convenience.

The TD-LTE portion of the trial, which involves seven vendors, will progress to full field trials in the second half of 2009. The locations for these field trials have been agreed in China, Europe and India.

The corresponding LTE FDD trials are progressing as planned and are now well into the final field trial stages where peak download speeds of up to 50 to 60 Mbps using 10 MHz bandwidth have been demonstrated. These field trials, which will also be introduced for the TD-LTE trials, create real-world loaded network conditions by using multiple base stations and terminal devices.

LTE’s potential as a flexible global technology with a strong eco-system was the core theme presented at yesterday’s LTE FDD/TDD Convergence Summit. The event attended by regulators, operators and vendors, was jointly hosted by China Mobile, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone with an endorsement from the GSMA and TD Alliance.

LTE technology is designed to deliver a range of customer benefits including higher speeds and enhanced throughput performance and lower latency thanks to improved spectral efficiency.

LTE is an evolution of existing 3G (WCDMA, TD-SCDMA and CDMA) cellular networks and has the advantage of offering inter-working with existing 3G technologies.
